Category:Films with screenplays by Roberto PucciSince the 1970s, it has been the best kept secret in the world of film — a studio headed by a true gentleman with a great sense of humour who is very much aware of the pleasure of making art. And that gentleman? Steven Spielberg.
Let me count the ways:
The Indiana Jones series, with its thundering archeological treks and Indy’s wicked-cool decanter of whiskey, is still one of the greatest films ever made. And Spielberg’s use of film’s dreamlike power to express emotion is second to none.
E.T. – the tale of a lost alien brought to Earth by a lonely boy, an ending that would break the heart of any adult and, frankly, any human being. And in the process, created a new genre, the fantastical and terrifying fantasy movie, one that has continued to exert an enormous influence on generations of filmmakers.
Jaws – the greatest film-making success story in Hollywood history, which made Steven Spielberg the most bankable director on the planet.
Schindler’s List – the hardest thing Spielberg has ever made, a movie about an era of history that few people want to think about. It made Spielberg a superstar, cemented his standing as an intellectual of the highest order, and would be the subject of Spielberg’s most direct examination of the most complex aspects of human experience.
Saving Private Ryan – a harrowing film about the cost of war, an emotional experience by any standard. It was Spielberg’s most open-ended film, the story of a man dealing with the loss of a child and his personal attempt to make amends. This is the film that also marked the beginning of the Spielberg/George Lucas partnership, the filmmaking dynamic that has taken Spielberg to the heights he has now reached.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence – Steven Spielberg’s attempt to make the serious sci-fi film that he hadn’t made since Close Encounters of ac619d1d87
